ADHD Q&A

What is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person thinks, focuses, and controls impulses. Although often diagnosed in childhood, ADHD can continue into adolescence and adulthood.

It’s not simply about being overly energetic or occasionally distracted — ADHD involves ongoing patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with daily functioning, relationships, or performance at school and work.

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

Symptoms of ADHD typically fall into two categories: inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity.

Inattention symptoms may include:

  • Difficulty staying focused on tasks or conversations
  • Frequently making careless mistakes
  • Trouble organizing tasks or managing time
  • Avoiding activities that require sustained mental effort
  • Losing items like keys, phones, or paperwork
  • Being easily distracted or forgetful in daily routines

Hyperactivity and impulsivity symptoms may include:

  • Fidgeting or squirming when seated
  • Feeling restless or constantly "on the go"
  • Talking excessively or interrupting others
  • Difficulty waiting for one’s turn
  • Acting without thinking about consequences

Not everyone with ADHD shows all these symptoms, and the severity can vary. In adults, hyperactivity may appear as inner restlessness rather than constant movement.

What causes ADHD?

The exact cause of ADHD isn’t fully understood, but research suggests it involves a combination of genetic, neurological, and environmental factors. ADHD tends to run in families, indicating a strong hereditary link. Brain imaging studies show differences in areas of the brain related to attention and self-regulation.

Other factors, such as premature birth, exposure to toxins during pregnancy, or early childhood trauma, may also increase risk.

How is ADHD treated?

At Mindway Behavioral, Adedeji’s ADHD treatment is highly individualized and often includes a combination of approaches. Common treatment options include:

Medication

Adedeji may prescribe stimulants like Adderall® or Ritalin® to improve focus and self-control. Nonstimulant medications are also available.

Therapy

Behavioral therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and coaching can help build coping skills and improve organization, time management, and emotional regulation.

Lifestyle strategies

Creating structure, using planners, reducing distractions, and prioritizing sleep and physical activity can also help manage symptoms.
